ACUPUNCTURE at Aletris Center in Scottsdale, AZ

The ancient Chinese believed that there is a universal life energy called chi or qi present in every living being. This energy is said to circulate throughout the body along specific pathways called meridians. As long as qi flows freely throughout the meridians, health is maintained; once the flow of energy is blocked, the system experiences imbalance and pain and illness occur. Acupuncture works to restore optimal functioning by stimulating certain points on the meridians in order to “free up” or “unblock” the qi energy.

From a biochemical perspective, we know that acupuncture has many positive effects on the body. It increases the body's natural production of endorphins, stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (which shuts down in chronic stress), and increases blood flow to local areas.

CUPPING at Aletris Center in Scottsdale, AZ

Originally called "horn therapy," cupping uses glass cups over a large muscular area, such as the back, to enhance the flow of energy and blood in the body. To create a vacuum, a flame is placed in an upside-down cup. When the oxygen in the cup is burned off, the cup is placed directly on the skin where it is held in place by suction. Often, the skin inside the cup visibly rises. Though generally painless, this method may produce a deep redness or discoloration which may persist for up to several days. These marks may resolve on their own and are not indications of complications or injury.

Acupuncturists use cupping for specific problems in the flow of qi, or life energy. Cupping disperses and moves qi by exerting suction and pressure and is commonly used when the qi is blocked at certain points, or when qi needs to be drawn to the surface of the body.

Cupping is commonly used to treat colds, lung infections, and muscle and joint pain or spasms.

TUINA at Aletris Center in Scottsdale, AZ

Tuina is a form of massage used to treat a variety of conditions. It is based on the meridian system of TCM and involves pressing, tapping, and kneading with the hands, knuckles, or elbows to promote qi flow through the body.

Tuina is commonly used to treat chronic pain, musculoskeletal conditions and stress-related disorders that affect the digestive and respiratory systems. Tuina is an excellent treatment for neck, shoulder and back pain, as well as sciatica and tennis elbow.

Tuina is more aggressive than traditional Swedish massage and may be used in conjunction with acupuncture, cupping, or moxibustion.
