CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE at Aletris Center in Scottsdale, AZ
Along with the development of acupuncture, the Chinese also developed a complex system of herbal medicine designed to treat almost any medical complaint. Along with acupuncture, this system has been practiced and honed for thousands of years in the East. In the course of your treatment, Chinese herbal remedies may be prescribed to you. They may be dispensed as loose herbs or in pills, granules, capsules, or tinctures (liquid preparations).
What is Chinese herbal medicine?
Herbal Chinese medicines work in a similar fashion to western herbs (like Echinacea or Gingko). They have specific functions and act like drugs in the body. They can calm anxiety, boost the immune system, or reduce PMS by addressing blockages, deficiencies, or excesses in chi. In addition, they are prescribed in a fashion that addresses the underlying cause of illness and not to “cover up” symptoms. Also, they tend to have fewer side effects than drugs, because the multiple constituents in plants are naturally balanced to create more benefit and fewer imbalances in our bodies.
In recent years, herbal medicines have become widely available in health food stores, drug stores, and on the Internet. While herbs are promoted as safe, they do have risks and potential negative interactions if combined with drugs. This is why it is so important to use herbal medicines under the care of a qualified professional, such as a licensed acupuncturist.
Why should I try Chinese herbs?
Many patients come in to us with the attitude that they've already tried herbs, and “they don't work.” Due to the FDA's absence from their regulation, it is true that many over the counter herbal formulas do not contain the right dose or form of an herb to be effective. At ALETRIS Center , we go to great lengths to research and choose only products from respectable companies whose formulas stand up to our own guidelines.
Chinese herbs are meant to address the same issues as acupuncture: disturbances in chi. They are taken daily and can often boost the effects of an acupuncture treatment, working synergistically. There are many different types of formulas. Some are meant to be taken for a short time, as in an acute illness such as cold or flu. Some are taken on a more long term basis, as in blood building formulas (for anemia) or energy tonics (to address adrenal fatigue or hormone imbalance).
How are these herbs dispensed?
Chinese herbs can come in many forms. They can be dispensed as the whole herb, which the patient then takes home and prepares as a tea. They can be given in powders, which are mixed in water and consumed. They can also be given in pill or liquid extract form.
Most of our patients prefer pill or liquid extract form due to the convenience and price of these formulas. Because we use superior brands, these formulas are almost always extremely effective. They are easily stored and travel well. Taking herbs consistently between acupuncture visits can improve outcomes and allow for less frequent treatments, while sustaining results.

Like drugs, however, herbs can come with adverse or allergic reactions. Please alert your practitioner if you are experiencing any new symptoms after starting an herbal formula.
