The Eastern approach to health and healing is a powerful one. When administered by a licensed acupuncturist and combined with both natural and conventional medicine, acupuncture can be even more effective at handing many acute and chronic issues. Acupuncture treatment may include moxibustion, cupping and tuina depending on each individual's needs. ALETRIS patients may choose to pursue treatment from an Eastern-only approach, or may decide to combine the best of naturopathic medicine and acupuncture for a multi-faceted treatment.

Acupuncture focuses on supporting and building qi, the energy that brings health and wellness in an individual. From a Western perspective, acupuncture will boost the immune system, regulate hormones, relieve anxiety, and eliminate pain. Acupuncture needles are not hollow, like conventional needles. They are not meant to draw blood, and thus they move through tissue without cutting it.

Acupuncture can be used to treat specific diseases, imbalances, or pain, or it can be used as a form of wellness support. At ALETRIS, we believe that supporting health is as important as fighting disease. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine is the preferred method for many of our patients.

Our acupuncturists treat the entire family and address a wide variety of health concerns. Acupuncture comes from a medical system that has been used in the East for thousands of years. It has been proven safe and effective time and time again in western medical studies.

How does acupuncture work? The Chinese believe that there is a universal energy called chi or qi present in every living organism. This energy is said to circulate throughout the body along specific pathways called meridian channels. As long as qi flows freely throughout the meridians, wellbeing is maintained; once the flow of energy is blocked, the system experiences imbalance and pain, and illness can occur. Acupuncture works to restore optimal functioning by stimulating certain points on the meridians in order to “unblock” the qi energy. Once the body's energy has been stimulated with acupuncture, it can then heal itself.

From a biochemical perspective, we know that acupuncture has many positive effects on the physical and mental body. It increases the body's natural production of endorphins, stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (which shuts down in chronic stress), and increases blood flow to local areas to speed healing and reduce inflammation.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine do not replace western medicine, however, the two can be beautifully combined to offer superior medical care. Our acupuncturists work hand in hand with naturopathic physicians and feel confident when referrals for western diagnosis and treatment should be made.

Acupuncture is used to treat many conditions, including allergies, cold and flu, thyroid imbalance, female issues, digestive issues, cardiovascular problems, headaches and migraines, sleep disturbance, arthritis, fatigue and skin problems.
